Duties: The Orientation & Mobility Instructor will provide quality assessments and training to clients of all ages through the Vision Rehabilitation Services programs. The job requires both facility-based and itinerate training to foster safe and independent travel skills for the clients we serve. The Orientation & Mobility Instructor will participate in community outreach events, advocacy opportunities, and will consult on the continuing development of Vision Rehabilitation Services programs. Provide individual orientation and mobility assessments and training to blind adults within the parameters of LRS, the VA, the Older-Blind grant, and VRS policies. Provide group instruction in Orientation & Mobility to participants In the New Vision and Next Step Programs for consumers with vision impairment as outlined in the program curricula. Provide orientation and mobility assessments and training to blind youth, as per contractual agreement with area school systems. Develop IEP goals and objectives for each child following evaluation and complete subsequent reports as required by the state for reimbursement. Monitor progress and implement therapeutic activities to promote confidence, build self-esteem, and foster successful learning experiences for all visually impaired clients. Complete daily documentation and subsequent reports in a timely manner to support requirements for reimbursement from all funding sources. Collaborate with team members to develop and execute successful adult and youth programs. Provide guidance and supervision to interns specializing in O&M and follow university guidelines to meet the requirements for their successful completion of fieldwork study. Foster a team environment with effective communication and a coordinated approach to providing vision rehabilitation services. Participate in community outreach, advocacy and educational events as needed. Follow all VRS expectations, policies, and procedures. Follow all ISO procedures as required. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Vision Rehab Services.
Qualifications: Degree from an accredited program with emphasis in Orientation & Mobility and certification to teach O&M skills to the blind and visually impaired; Specialized training in adapted skills for the blind and visually impaired. Proficient O&M skills for teaching cane travel in various settings; Knowledge of visual disabilities and effects on functional skills; proficient in written and verbal communications; proficient in use of Internet and word processing programs. Minimum hourly requirements for certification to teach O&M required; Two years experience teaching O&M skills preferred; Experience writing IEP goals and providing O&M services to youth in schools preferred.
