School Psychologist
Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind
Staunton, VA
Duties: The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a School Psychologist to provide testing and evaluation, consultation and psychological services to students with blindness, deafness and children with blindness and/or deafness who also have significant cognitive impairment. This position is for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning 8/11/08. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Administration of psychological, and educational tests and other assessment procedures
- Interpreting assessment results to parents, students and professionals
- Obtaining, integrating and interpreting information about child behavior and conditions related to learning
- Consulting with staff members in planning school programs to meet the needs of students
- Planning and managing a program of psychological services to include counseling, as appropriate to role
- Assisting in the development of positive behavioral intervention and supports
- Parent counseling and training
- Staff development
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Sixty graduate hours which culminate in at least a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university and completion of an approved program in School Psychology
- Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia license issued by the Board of Education with an endorsement in School Psychology
- Certification issued by the National School Psychology Certification Board, preferred
- Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, learning and motivation; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
- Knowledge of child growth and development, behavior management and the special needs of children with disabilities and their families
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental impairment
- Demonstrated skill in psychological and educational testing
- Experience and skill in counseling, crisis intervention, and behavior management
- Knowledge of the Standards of Learning (SOL) and ability to use test data to revise instruction to enhance student achievement
- Knowledge of age-appropriate transition assessments and career counseling and guidance
- Knowledge of community service agencies and special education regulations
- Knowledge of research, research methods, issues, trends and research-based best practices that shall enhance the academic achievement of all students and reduce academic achievement gaps
- Ability to use educational technology including computers and other technologies specific to sensory impairments, in instruction, assessment and professional development activities
- Ability to plan and organize work
- Ability to follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification required or must be obtained per school policies
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing
Additonal Information: Position Number F0032; Open Date 3/10/2008; Hiring Range $40,959 - $60,000
