Edcuation Specialist for Multiple Disabilities Program

Duties: Under the supervision of the program administrator, the education specialist is responsible for providing technical assistance to school districts with students who experience low incidence disabilities. Technical assistance may include consultation to school and district on how to formulate/implement person-centered plans, functional behavioral assessments, behavior intervention plans, crisis plans and IEP development. In-service training, videoconferencing/ distance delivery, and other help is provided, as needed, to assist the district in implementing an appropriate instructional programs. This individual must be able and willing to travel extensively and independently in rural/ remote Alaska as passenger on jet and small propeller aircraft, by large and small water craft, snow machine, dog sled, all terrain vehicles, etc.

Provide consultative services to district staff, students, and parents to include: Individualized educational recommendations through onsite and distance delivery for students age three through 21; Assessing identified students and interpreting results orally and in written form; Assisting with the development and implementation of student IEP/instructional programs; Evaluating student progress on an ongoing basis and recommending intervention strategies; Demonstrating/teaching specialized strategies and/or providing topical in-services and workshops to local school personnel, parents, students, peers, and community; Assisting districts in procuring specialized instructional materials and/or adapting available material/equipment; Facilitating interagency collaboration.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in education with an emphasis on multiple disabilities OR a bachelor’s degree and suitable experience. Minimum three years recent experience working with students who experience multiple disabilities and their families. Requirements met for Alaska State Department of Education Special Education Type A Certificate. Additional Information: Preferred experience: Demonstrated experience in training professionals, paraprofessionals, and community members; Interagency networking and collaboration; Experience in developing positive behavior support plans, visual supports, and programs to enhance communication skills; Current knowledge of assistive technology; Familiarity and experience with conducting/facilitating functional behavioral assessment and positive behavioral support programs; Knows and demonstrates skills associated with being an effective consultant, such as: Collaborative consultation, Native/cultural sensitivity, Generic training issues, Adult learning styles, Issues related to rural/remote special education, Technology and distance education.
