Duties: The mission of the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is to enable each person who is deaf-blind to live and work in his or her community of choice. The Helen Keller National Center is the ONLY center in the United States that provides vocational training exclusively to youth and adults who are deaf-blind. We currently have an exciting career opportunity available to join the Technology Department as a Senior Instructor in our Sands Point, NY location.
The Senior Instructor evaluates and teaches adaptive technology skills to youths and adults who are deaf-blind at the Helen Keller National Center. Other duties include:
- Evaluate student’s ability to use a broad range of adaptive equipment, which includes: Braille displays, screen magnification programs, voice output systems, TTYs, and various other devices designed for individuals who are deaf-blind. This includes the integration of technology within various departments.
- Recommend, plan, and provide training in the use of adaptive technology on an individualized basis.
- Record progress and submit scheduled written reports and recommend appropriate materials and equipment for students.
- Keep abreast of trends and innovations in the field of adaptive technology for individuals who are deaf, blind, and deaf-blind. This may include local and distant travel and presentations at conferences, HKNC publications, professional journals, and the HKNC web site.
- Provide in-service training to consumers, teachers, in-house staff, and at various workshop/conferences outside HKNC and provide off-campus consultation to individuals at their work site or home. This may include local and distant travel.
- Develop and/or maintain relationships with companies that manufacture or distribute adaptive technology for individuals who are deaf-blind.
- Accompany and serve as guide and/or interpreter for students and professional staff members when assigned. To accomplish this, it may be required to use personal vehicle on occasion.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years experience in teaching – Preferably, to deaf-blind individuals
- Master’s Degree in Special Education, Deaf Education, Rehabilitation Teaching or Education of the Blind/Visually Impaired, Computer Science, or related degree.
- Must be proficient with use of Computers
Knowledge of adaptive technology used by persons who are blind/visually impaired or deaf-blind preferred. - Sign Language skills preferred – must become proficient within 2 years of employment.
Additional Information:
- FT work schedule Monday – Friday (35 hours/week)
- Salary: $46,535.4559
- Paid vacation, personal and sick time
- 100% company paid benefits (no employee contribution) through 1199, including tuition reimbursement.
