National Association for Parents of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI)

Information and Referral Service

NAPVI provides and handles the only national 800 line in the country that specifically serves families who have children that are partially sighted, blind, and visually impaired with additional disabilities. NAPVI has direct support, information, and referral services. The range of inquiries NAPVI handles includes the following:

information on rare childhood eye diseases
bullet
information to families adjusting to blindness
bullet
helpful, practical hints and adaptations from early childhool development to daily living skills
bullet
educational choices and knowledge of educational law as it relates to specific unique needs of children with visual impairments
bullet
information on current research

The NAPVI office and Board of Directors provide the above information by:

matching parents and family members with similar eye conditions or concerns with each other on request
bullet
publishing a quarterly newsletter for members, with copies provided to interested persons
bullet
disseminating a basic information packet containing information about NAPVI upon request
bullet
referring callers to appropriate service agencies and information sources
bullet
networking with other national organizations
bullet
participating in coalitions and task forces addressing specific concerns of people with visual impairments to provide parent perspective
bullet
establishing and maintaining contacts with key legislative personnel at state and national levels
bullet
disseminating information on current educational issues affecting children who are blind and visually impaired
bullet
presenting information to parents, teachers and medical professionals at conferences and meetings locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally
bullet
maintaining contacts with medical and educational professionals
bullet
sponsoring conferences on a biannual basis to address the needs of parents
bullet
exhibiting materials at appropriate meetings and conferences
bullet
collaborating with scientists on research studies
bullet
developing and marketing specific publications of interest to parents
